Eduardo Herrera posed a threat, played a part in the goal, and won a penalty for Rangers on Wednesday – but was still criticised by supporters.
Pedro Caixinha really needed a response after a 2-0 defeat in the Scottish League Cup semi-finals to Motherwell cast further doubt about his immediate future in the Rangers’ hot seat.
What he did not need, then, was for Daniel Candeias to fire a tame penalty straight at Kilmarnock’s goalkeeper before former Gers winger Chris Burke tapped in a dramatic last gasp equaliser to condemn Rangers to a 1-1 draw at Ibrox on Wednesday night.
And it ended up being the last straw for the Portuguese, who was sacked the following day. Following the game, it was the performance of one of the manager’s biggest summer signings that got Rangers fans talking on social media after another disappointing result – and not necessarily for the right reasons.
Eduardo Herrera had a positive impact when replacing the injured Graham Dorrans midway through the first-half, providing a presence up front, linking well with his team-mates and playing a part in Jason Holt’s first Gers goal in over a year to put the hosts ahead.
The Mexican also won the penalty that gave Rangers a chance to seal a vital win. Supporters, however, were less than impressed as Herrera allowed Candeias to spurn the perfect chance from the spot.
Rangers fans expected far more from their £1.5 million striker but, since arriving from Pumas UNAM (Daily Record), Herrera has scored just twice in 11 games. And, rightly or wrongly, the 29-year-old may end up becoming something of a posterboy for Caixinha’s failings.
