Glasgow Rangers are said to be closing in on the transfer of defender Connor Goldson.

The Scottish Sun report Rangers have agreed a fee with Brighton and Hove Albion to sign the centre-back.

The fee is said to be worth £3.5 million, a figure which is small enough in today’s transfer market, yet a sizeable one for Rangers’ modest transfer budget.

The agreement ends a month of speculation and personal terms are expected to be a formality, with Goldson reported to be keen to play under Steven Gerrard.

Centre-back is an area Rangers need to improve after Russell Martin’s loan did not work out, and defender David Bates decided to leave and join Hamburg.

Goldson is a big talent who has worked his way up the divisions in England but he struggled for game time last season after undergoing heart surgery early in 2017.

His lack of regular football means he is somewhat of a gamble for Rangers, yet this has also contributed to him leaving so cheaply, and Brighton have been reluctant to let him go at all, rejecting two previous bids from the Gers.

For Rangers, this is a win for Steven Gerrard as he gets his man, and they can then move onto the next target as his re-shaping of the squad continues.
