Glasgow Rangers have finalised the appointment of Jimmy Nicholl as assistant manager, the club announced last night.

Nicholl will provide an experienced head to support new manager Graeme Murty, who is in his first senior coaching role.

Nicholl has strong connections with Rangers, playing for the club three decades ago under Graeme Souness and Walter Smith.

He admitted to the club website he thought the opportunity to return to Ibrox may never materialise, and is thrilled that it has.

After a frustrating few years, it has become clear that Rangers need to find their identity, and a former star like Nicholl can help impress on the current players what exactly is expected of them and how they can meet supporters’ expectations.

Nicholl’s appointment comes at a good time for Rangers, as he can get to know the players during the winter break.

While fans are anxiously awaiting the arrivals of new signings, Nicholl’s appointment is a welcome piece of good news.
