Bruno Alves’ restoration to Portugal’s starting line up gave Rangers fans another early chance to see what they are getting over the next two campaigns.
The veteran centre-back was left out of the Seleccao’s opening Confederations Cup game against Mexico on Sunday, which his country went on to draw 2-2.
And he made an instant impact against hosts Russia in Moscow, producing a dominant aerial display to help preserve a clean sheet for Fernando Santos’s side, who won by a solitary Cristiano Ronaldo goal.
Alves’s display drew praise from not only those of a Rangers persuasion, but Portugal fans and neutral observers alike.

Meanwhile, Rangers’ recruitment drive is expected to continue with Mexican pair Eduardo Herrera and Carlos Pena, who are said to have arrived in Glasgow on Wednesday having been pictured en route overnight.
And if all goes to plan this coming campaign, Alves may not be the only Rangers representative at next summer’s World Cup.
