Former Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha was not impressed with Andy Halliday and sent him out on loan to Azerbaijan.
The midfielder returned to Ibrox in January but last night’s performance had Rangers fans wishing he had stayed there.
The 26-year-old midfielder was in the starting line-up against minnows Fraserburgh last night, a 3-0 win for Rangers.
Josh Windass impressed by scoring a hat-trick – but Halliday looked rusty and struggled to make an impact.
It was Halliday’s first start for Rangers since last season and his display did not provide manager Graeme Murty with reason to rush him straight back into the starting line-up.
Halliday was a late substitute in league wins over Aberdeen and Ross County.
He is currently under contract with the Gers until 2020.
Halliday will get more opportunities this season but there is a queue of midfielders hoping to make an impact including new signing Greg Docherty.
Last night was a chance missed for him, especially with Ross McCrorie and Graham Dorrans still out injured.
