Rangers have secured a deal to sign Scotland international defender Russell Martin on loan until the end of the season.

Martin adds vital experience to Graeme Murty’s side and has the ability to become a firm fans favourite at Ibrox.

The acquisition of Martin eases any reliance on 35-year-old Bruno Alves, who has struggled with injuries since joining in the summer.

Martin had fallen out of favour at Norwich City and was keen to move on for a fresh start.

This is the defender’s first spell in Scottish football and represents a big challenge for the 32-year-old.

Rangers have been active in the market this January, bringing in players from English clubs.

Jamie Murphy, Jason Cummings and Sean Goss have all signed on loan deals along with Martin, and the hope is that the Gers will be able to make most of them permanent if they can prove themselves between now and the end of the season.

Rangers are currently in third place but still harbour ambitions of catching Celtic, who lost their first league game under Brendan Rodgers at the end of 2017.
