Rangers were knocked out of the Europa League last week.

Compared to last season’s humiliation, Rangers’ Europa League run this year was pretty impressive.

Steven Gerrard’s side negotiated tricky qualifying ties in Croatia and Russia to reach the group stages, where Rangers held Villarreal to two draws.

They came agonisingly close to reaching the last 16, narrowly losing to a late goal against Rapid Vienna last week when Steven Gerrard committed his side forward to chase the win they needed.

Rangers did well to be so close to the knockout stages with one game to go, but there was a sense it could have been even better.

Monday’s Europa League draw showed how good it could have been. Rangers’ conquerors Rapid Vienna were drawn against Italian giants Inter Milan.

The last 32 tie would have been so difficult for this Rangers side, but it would have been a fantastic occasion.

A knockout tie against Inter under the lights at Ibrox would have been special.

And for the hordes of Rangers fans, a missed opportunity to travel en masse to the San Siro.

Rangers came close. This has to inspire them for next season to go one better.

If they win the league, the Champions League could even be in their future.
