Martyn Waghorn has now scored nine goals in 16 games after swapping Rangers for Ipswich Town in the summer.

With Alfredo Morelos extending his barren run into an eighth game in Rangers’ 2-0 home defeat to Hamilton last time out, Martyn Waghorn’s latest strike for Ipswich Town just applies a healthy dose of salt to the wounds.
Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy told the Daily Record in August that his side paid far less than the reported £1 million fee for Waghorn in the summer. And, on current form, the lung-busting frontman is worth far more than Rangers sold him for.
A well-taken goal in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Sheffield United means Waghorn has now netted nine times in 16 games for his new side – an impressive record that has Rangers supporters wondering why the club ever let him go.

Nostalgia can do funny things to the mind, however, and it must be pointed out that many Rangers supporters were queuing up to criticise Waghorn’s performances on social media last season, particularly during the latter stages of the 2016/17 season.

The 27-year-old was excellent as he helped Rangers earn promotion back to the top tier of Scottish football but struggled in the Premiership last season, netting just seven goals in 32 games.
And, at the time, few were wiping away the tears as Waghorn returned south of the border with Ipswich in the summer. But, then again, few expected Waghorn to make such a remarkable impression at Portman Road.
