Skrtel was a target for Rangers in the summer, in what would be a reunion with Steven Gerrard.

Rangers have reportedly not given up on signing Fenerbahce defender after being priced out of a move in the summer transfer window – and Gers fans have reacted on Twitter.

Turkish outlet CNN have claimed that Rangers are not giving up on missing out on the 33-year-old defender, who played alongside Steven Gerrard at Liverpool before leaving Anfield in 2016 to join Fener.

Rangers could not afford to meet Fener’s £5million price tag (Daily Record), or indeed meet his excessive wages of 67,000 a week (Scotsman). His agent Karol Csonto confirmed as much: “The finances were terribly far apart.”

Rangers boast plenty of options at centre-back after four of Steven Gerrard’s 15 summer signings were brought in to provide cover in the middle of defence – Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic, Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley.

Skrtel’s contract with Fenerbahce expires at the end of the season and that may see his £5million price tag reduced in January, with Fener set to lose him for nothing in the summer. If they reduce the asking price, they will be more likely to offload the defender.

That could benefit Rangers, who are known to be tight in the finances department after recording losses. Gers fans reacted to the news that Skrtel could be a target in January once again.
