A player Rangers released as a teenager came back to haunt Steven Gerrard’s side on Sunday.

Son of the former Rangers midfielder Derek – and nephew of another one, Barry – Lewis Ferguson struck late to send the Gers out of the Scottish League Cup at the semi-final stage.

Interviewed by the Daily Record afterwards, the Aberdeen midfielder spoke of his Rangers rejection, revealing how his dad was informed of the Light Blues’ decision over the phone.

And after his exploits at Hampden Park, some Bears hope that is not the last they will see of Ferguson Jnr in Rangers colours…

But that particular view is far from representative of the entire Ibrox fanbase…

Strabane Loyalist‏ @Strabane_GSTQ: Absolutely robbed by these sheep ******** ********. We are twice the team they are. All eyes on Scottish cup and league now. Disappointed in young Ferguson. Should have showed respect. #RangersFC #WATP

Rangers River‏ @RangersRiver: Replying to @rappinghood We dominated, their keeper didn’t make a save, Tav fluffed 45,000 set pieces, Gerrard waited far too long (again) to make subs. Derek Ferguson’s son scored from 5 yards from 1 decent set piece then celebrated in a way that would see me disown the wee ****. The honeymoon is over.

After leaving Rangers, Ferguson progressed through the youth ranks at Hamilton Academical, before moving to Aberdeen at the end of his contract in the summer transfer window.

His only other goal for the Dons, a superb overhead kick, came against Burnley in qualifying for this season’s Europa League.

Would you welcome the former Rangers youngster back to Ibrox?
