Rangers could pay for not offering Barrie McKay a new deal with Mark Warburton’s Nottingham Forest attempting to nab the winger from Ibrox.
Rangers have not produced a player with the talent of Barrie McKay in some time. An intelligent and technically gifted winger blessed with innate vision and potential by the bucketload, the 22-year-old is exactly the kind of player manager Pedro Caixinha should be building his team around.
Why the club have not offered him a new contract with his current deal expiring next summer, then, is anyone’s guess.
Especially as McKay told the Daily Record that he would jump at the chance to commit his future to the club – despite initially rejecting fresh terms back in February.
As a result, the Scottish Sun reports that former Rangers manager Mark Warburton is eyeing up a cut price move and a reunion at Nottingham Forest this summer.
And if the Scottish giants do not ensure that McKay feels valued at Ibrox, you could hardly blame him if his head is turned. After all, the former Kilmarnock youngster made great strides under Warburton in the first half of the season.
By comparison, McKay has been used sparingly throughout Caixinha’s short-lived regime. The fact he was overlooked for Old Firm games against Celtic in both the league and the Scottish Cup semi-finals speaks volumes.
For the record, Rangers lost on both occasions, 2-0 and 5-1.
But would supporters accept his departure if a substantial fee came their way?
