Could Glasgow Rangers really consider trying to bring Glenn Hoddle to Ibrox this summer?
Several Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to express their surprise after Glenn Hoddle became the 5/1 third favourite with Sky Bet to be the Gers’ boss on the opening day of next season.
Without a doubt, it would be a huge surprise if Graeme Murty was in serious contention to keep his current job beyond this season. There have been some highlights along the way, but any optimism about what this campaign could lead to has completely disappeared in recent weeks.
Rangers are just three points ahead of fourth place Hibernian in the table, while Kilmarnock could perhaps put a little bit of pressure on in the remaining weeks if their respective runs of form continue during the final five games as they sit five points back in fifth.
And with Celtic comfortably dispatching Rangers in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup at the weekend, it would shock, and probably anger, most if Murty – who still deserves credit for the work that he did when both Mark Warburton and Pedro Caixinha departed – remained in charge.
What would perhaps be just as great a surprise however, is if Hoddle got the job – but Sky Bet seem to believe that that may not be entirely out of the question this summer as he is listed at 5/1 right now.
Hoddle has not managed since 2006, but of course, enjoyed a brilliant playing career and showed a lot of promise throughout his time in the dugout. He spent around three years as England boss before his well-publicised departure in 1999.
Interestingly, it does not appear that the scepticism amongst Rangers fans is to do with his ability as a manager, but rather several supporters cannot see how the club will end up with Hoddle as their next boss as it seems such a bizarre suggestion.
There are some fans who are excited about the idea and seem to hope that there is something in the odds – though after the left-field appointment of Pedro Caixinha, it is difficult to imagine that anything emerging from Hoddle’s odds will only be met by a positive reaction.
