Rangers are reportedly keen on bringing defender James Lawrence to Ibrox.
Rangers have already tied up four summer signings, but boss Steven Gerrard will be on the hunt for more as he attempts to mount a title challenge next season.
Jordan Jones, Jake Hastie, Steven Davis and Greg Stewart have joined, but Gerrard must look to bring in some defensive reinforcements too.
Loanee Joe Worrall has gone back to Nottingham Forest, whilst Gareth McAuley will become a free agent at the end of the month, meaning two centre backs must be brought in.
Now, the Daily Record report that Rangers are interested in signing Anderlecht defender James Lawrence, believing that a £3million move for the 26-year-old is in the pipeline.
Lawrence joined Anderlecht from Trencin last summer, and the England-born centre back earned his first Wales caps this season too, featuring under Ryan Giggs.
Formerly of Arsenal, QPR, Haarlem, Ajax, Sparta Rotterdam, RKC Waalwijk and Trencin, Lawrence has taken a real tour of Europe over the course of his career, and Gerrard allegedly wants him at Ibrox to bolster his back line.
Rangers fans are a little split, with some believing that he would be a great addition to the Ibrox back line, with one fan calling him ‘class’. However, others feel that he has no pedigree and given that he’s not an immediate star or a player for the future, such a big fee isn’t justified – especially as Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson should start next season as Gerrard’s centre back pairing.
Just to add some more information for Rangers fans, we compiled some tweets from Wales fans after Lawrence’s display against Hungary last week, and it’s fair to say they aren’t fans, branding him ‘dreadful’ and ‘terrible’ – so Gers supporters may well hope this one isn’t true.
