Rangers are wasting no time in building a team capable of challenging for the top honours next season.

The Gers last month confirmed that they had spent £3 million on signing Ianis Hagi on a permanent basis.

The 21-year-old dazzled for a couple of months after joining Rangers on a half-season loan in January.

Things are tough financially for many clubs across Europe and the Ibrox side are no different, but managing director Stewart Robertson has revealed that the ‘incredible’ season ticket sales for the 2020-21 campaign effectively funded the deal for Hagi.

He told the club’s official website: “We are very conscious of the fantastic backing we have had in terms of the season tickets so far. It has been incredible when you consider everything that has gone on.

“That has allowed us to do things like the Ianis Hagi deal and will allow us to do other deals going forward as well.”

There’s no margin for error for Rangers in terms of recruitment this summer.

As the table showed last season, the light Blues, who finished the campaign 13 points behind Celtic, are still quite far behind their Old Firm rivals, who are going for an unprecedented 10-in-a-row next term.

The Hoops realising that ambition is a nightmare prospect for Rangers and manager Steven Gerrard, along with Director of Football Ross Wilson, has a lot of work to do to ensure it doesn’t happen.

But Hagi represents a fine start to that recruitment drive.
