Rangers have been linked with Umar Sadiq, with Sky Sports reporting that Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox club are interested in the AS Roma striker.

It has been reported that Rangers want to sign Sadiq on a season-long loan deal from Italian outfit Roma in the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old striker is a very talented and promising young footballer, and the Nigeria Under-23 international could be a smart signing for a Rangers side who will be aiming to compete with Old Firm rivals Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next season.

While some Rangers fans will be concerned about Gerrard signing a 21-year-old who has not yet fully established himself, Sadiq’s former teammate Karol Mets’s comments will allay those worries.

NAC Breda star Mets, who can operate as a central defender or as a defensive midfielder, played with Sadiq during the second half of last season.

The Nigerian striker moved to Dutch side NAC on loan from Roma in the January transfer window.

The 25-year-old Estonia international’s comments on Sadiq underline just how good the Nigerian striker is, and Rangers fans will be pleased.

Mets told The Scottish Sun about Sadiq: “When you look at him — this slim, 6ft 4in guy — you think he’s going to be a target man. But there’s a lot more to him than that.

“He’s lightning-quick and, for that reason, he played a lot of games for Breda on the wing. One-on-one he’s very good and because of that you have to mark him very tightly.

“In a lot of ways, he’s a pain in the ass, in a good way. He’s so unpredictable you don’t really know what’s coming next from him. He’s got the X-factor in that sense.”
