Rangers hopes of signing one of their rumoured January targets could be in tatters after his manager’s admission on Monday.
The Sun reported earlier this month that Rangers are ‘eyeing a shock move’ for the Norwich City midfielder Kenny McLean and ‘may offer a deal paid in instalments or look at a loan agreement with a guaranteed option to buy in the summer’.
But McLean – who was part of the Scotland side that qualified for next year’s European Championship, alongside the Ibrox duo Jon McLaughlin and Ryan Jack – suffered a twisted knee in Norwich’s 1-0 win at Middlesbrough on his return from international duty.
And speaking via the Canaries’ official website on Monday, the 28-year-old’s boss said that, in the worst-case scenario, he could be sidelined for much of this season.
“We scanned him [McLean] this morning after he twisted his knee and he has a meniscus tear,” explained Daniel Farke. “We will wait for the injury to settle down and he’ll see a specialist this week. We will also handle this in a conservative way.
“He will be out for six weeks or if he needs surgery it could be four to five months.”
McLean is said to have grown up a Rangers supporter and was on the Gers’ books as a youngster.
He later had spells at St Mirren and Aberdeen – where he was a teammate of Jack – before joining Norwich in January 2018.

Having impressed at Carrow Road, McLean signed an improved four-year deal the following summer.
But he has been in and out of Farke’s team this season and a return to Scotland with Rangers could appeal.
Rangers only recently added to their central midfield options – which already comprised Joe Aribo, Scott Arfield, Steven Davis, Glen Kamara and Jack – with the signing of Bongani Zungu on loan from Amiens.
Gerrard’s side have an option to turn Zungu’s deal permanent next summer, when the contract of Davis is also due to expire.
