Rangers clinched their first win of the Europa League group stage on Thursday night as they beat Rapid Vienna 3-1 at Ibrox.

The Gers went into the game needing a response having surprisingly lost 1-0 away at Livingston on Sunday, but their last Europa League game – a 2-2 draw at Villarreal – showed they can compete in Europe once again.

On Thursday, Rangers were back at Ibrox to host Rapid Vienna, but controversially went behind as Veton Berisha scored from close range, despite a foul and an offside in the build-up.

However, Rangers didn’t feel sorry for themselves, and hit back immediately as James Tavernier crossed for Alfredo Morelos to score from point-blank range.

It took a while for Rangers to go ahead in the second half, but Morelos was fouled inside the area, and Tavernier converted from the penalty spot to give Rangers a 2-1 lead.

With Rapid pushing everybody forward late on, Daniel Candeias won possession back on the halfway line and backheeled for Morelos to slot home the third in a superb win.

A host of players impressed for Rangers, but defender Joe Worrall was particularly impressive in the heart of defence having been blasted for his performance against Livingston on Sunday.

The Nottingham Forest loanee was praised as being ‘immense’ against Rapid, with fans admitting that were glad to have been proved wrong by the young centre back, adding that they hope fans give him more of a chance after huge criticism of late.
