Pena struggled to impress during his time at Rangers.
Carlos Pena is set to return to Rangers in January as his loan spell with Mexican outfit Necaxa expires on December 31, and Rangers fans have discussed whether he deserves a second chance on Twitter.
The 28-year-old joined the Gers under Pedro Caixinha for a fee of £2.7million (Daily Star) in the summer of 2017, but managed just 14 appearances in all competitions as Caixinha was sacked soon after.
A 19-time Mexico international, Pena managed five goals in that time – a decent return for a player still getting to grips with Scottish football. But his inconsistency lead to Graeme Murty deciding to send him out on loan.
He joined Cruz Azul until the end of the 2017-18 season, forming a reunion with Pedro Caixinha. But just eight appearances later, it had all gone pear-shaped.
Indeed, Pena was caught buying beer after training, urinating in a fountain and even went AWOL. In the summer, he moved on loan to Necaxa where he has seemingly ditched his alcoholism and made nine appearances.
But he still remains in and out of the side, hardly doing him any favours if he harbours any hope of reigniting his Rangers spell. Pena still has 18 months remaining on his contract at Ibrox.
His loan expires in January and Rangers fans discussed on Twitter if they want the club to give him a second chance under Gerrard, with many in favour of letting him earn his stripes under their current boss.
