Waghorn starred as Derby earned an excellent win over Premier League side Southampton.
Rangers fans have applauded Derby County striker and former Ibrox star Martyn Waghorn after he played an integral part in helping knock Premier League side Southampton out of the FA Cup on Wednesday night.
The 28-year-old has struggled somewhat at Derby this season since Frank Lampard lured the powerhouse forward to Pride Park from Ipswich Town last summer for a fee rising to £7.5million (EADT).
Waghorn has scored just five goals this season – with only two of those coming in 18 Championship appearances. But the former Leicester City ace started and finished Wednesday night’s encounter, where he scored his fifth of the season,
Southampton had taken a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Stuart Armstrong and a lovely chip from Nathan Redmond, but Derby replied instantly. Harry Wilson scored a free-kick, before Waghorn headed home from eight yards.
The match went to penalties at St. Mary’s Stadium, with Waghorn taking the first for Lampard’s side and scoring past Saints goalkeeper Angus Gunn. Richard Keogh scored the decisive penalty to send Derby through.
Waghorn remains a favourite at Ibrox after scoring 44 goals and creating 17 more for the Teddy Bears in just 78 appearances in all competitions. He posted on Twitter, and Rangers fans reacted by applauding the striker for his display.
