Lee Wallace may have been at Rangers for six years but Cardiff City loanee Declan John is already being tipped to take his place.

You wonder whether Lee Wallace hobbling off 12 minutes in against Partick Thistle on Friday night to hand Cardiff City loanee Declan John his debut will be a watershed moment in the immediate future of both players at Ibrox.
Skipper Wallace will always be a hugely respected figure at Ibrox for sticking with the club following their liquidation and demotion to the Third Division back in 2012. At 30 years of age, however, his best days are behind him and his influence at both ends of the pitch has waned considerably of late.
John, meanwhile, is the new kid on the block. Rangers’ final signing of a frantic summer of recruitment, the 22-year-old Welsh international was cast into the background at Cardiff once the clearly unconvinced Neil Warnock arrived in October of last year and moved to Ibrox to get a promising career back on track.

He’s certainly made a positive first impression, his pace and attacking intent standing out in two games against Partick in the space of four days in league and cup.
And some supporters are even going as far as to suggest that John, who will be out of contract at the end of this season, is already capable of stepping into Wallace’s shoes long-term.

With the long-serving captain ruled out of the Old Firm clash with Celtic on Saturday thanks to a groin injury, and John likely to step in, that theory is likely to be tested.
