Glasgow Rangers defender Bruno Alves has been linked with a departure from Ibrox.

Graeme Murty has played down reports about linked-away Bruno Alves leaving Rangers.

The Daily Record reported on Monday that Rangers had agreed a deal with Serie A side Benevento to sign the 36-year-old.

Alves, who has 94 caps for Portugal, was the Gers’ most high-profile signing last summer but a lack of form and a couple of injuries has made it difficult for him to establish any rhythm at Ibrox so far.

The former Zenit St Petersburg and Fenerbahce stalwart is injured now with a calf problem, but Murty is hopeful that he can regain fitness and play a big role in the Gers’ season from here on out.

Rangers host Aberdeen at Ibrox tonight and Murty, speaking in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, suggested that Alves was interested in leaving to preserve his hopes of going to the World Cup this summer.

And suffice to say some fans of the Glasgow giants aren’t pleased with that motive, if true.
