Scottish Premiership giants Rangers are keen to beat Premier League high-flyers Burnley to the signing of Kilmarnock’s Northern Ireland winger Jordan Jones.

Jamie Murphy has realised a childhood dream. The boyhood Rangers fans has completed his move to Ibrox, joining on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion with a permanent deal set to be concluded in the summer.

But will Murphy be joined at Rangers by another fleet-footed wideman? According to The Mirror (live transfer blog 7/1, 11.02am), the Glasgow giants have made a £500,000 bid for Kilmarnock starlet Jordan Jones – but have seen the offer rejected.

Now, with Premier League outfit Burnley also expressing an interest, it remains to be seen whether Rangers will up their offer. The question, however, should perhaps be whether they even need to.

Like Murphy, Northern Ireland international Jones is a talented left-winger renowned for his ability to take on and beat opposition full-backs.

Now, Rangers have needed to reinforce their flank since the bizarre decision to let Barrie McKay leave for Nottingham Forest in the summer but failed in their attempts to lure Jamie Walker and Lewis Morgan to Ibrox.

The addition of Murphy, however, probably fills the most gaping void in Rangers’ squad. And with midfielder Josh Windass showing over the last few weeks that he has no problem filling in on the left with great effect, it seems that Rangers are now well enforced in the position.

So a deal for Jones should perhaps be put on the backburner for now. Killie will likely demand far more than £500,000 – but is this a fee Rangers really need to spend?
