Rangers will play Malmo or HJK Helsinki in their first Champions League tie in a decade and Steven Gerrard only has ten days to add any new faces to his squad if they are to be eligible for the Third Qualifying Round tie.

The Light Blues learned who they would face this morning when the draw was conducted in Switzerland, and it set the clock ticking for Rangers to confirm any more new signings.

So far, Gerrard has added three new faces to his squad this summer in Fashion Sakala, John Lundstram and Nnamdi Ofoborh – but goes into the qualifiers without Kemar Roofe and Glen Kamara through suspension.

The news Ofoborh is out indefinitely after a heart issue was flagged during routine testing thins Gerrard’s options out a little while Ryan Jack is still to return from injury.

With Rangers kicking off their qualifying campaign against the winners of the Malmo/HJK tie on August 3/4, Gerrard has until midnight on July 19 (11pm UK time) to register players.

UEFA’s rules on player registrations means clubs must register an A and B list with the B list made up of youth players while the A list is capped at 25.

Of those 25, 8 spaces are reserved for homegrown players – with four of the eight trained anywhere in Scotland between 15 and 21 and the other four having to come through the Rangers system.

a maximum of two new eligible players on List A after the deadline, “provided the quota of locally trained players is respected.”
