Rangers will be in the market for a couple of centre backs this summer.
Rangers head to face Celtic this weekend, but their season is all but over – and Steven Gerrard will have one eye on the summer transfer window already.
The Gers will be in need of more signings even after a huge influx of players over the last year, and centre back will be a major area of concern.
Gareth McAuley will be out of contract and won’t earn a new deal, whilst Joe Worrall will be returning to parent club Nottingham Forest, with no chance of a permanent move.
With those two set to leave Ibrox, two more defenders will be needed alongside Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic for next season – and two targets are set to become free agents.
The Scottish Sun reported last summer that Rangers wanted Blackpool’s Curtis Tilt, whilst SDNA in Greece claimed in November that the Gers also like AEK Athens ace Vassilis Lambropoulos.
Months on, both players have yet to sign new contracts with their clubs, and are set to become free agents at the end of the season, making them potential bargains for Rangers.
Tilt, 27, has impressed for Blackpool, but League One is the highest level he has played at. Jumping up to the pressures of Ibrox now would be a gamble, but for free, he can offer depth in the Rangers defence.
Lambropoulos, with Champions League and international experience, fits the bill better, and still has plenty in the tanks at 28, making sense as a McAuley replacement.
Either player would be worth a punt for free, and having come to the final stages of the season without signing new deals, Gerrard now has a golden chance to bring both to Ibrox without spending a penny.
