Rangers have enjoyed a dream night in Europe this evening, hammering Borussia Dortmund 4-2 as Calvin Bassey turned in a strong performance.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst really needed a statement win after the hammering at Celtic, and he got exactly that in Germany tonight.

Few were giving Rangers much of a chance against Dortmund even with star striker Erling Haaland out injured for the hosts.

James Tavernier’s penalty opened the floodgates for Rangers as Alfredo Morelos and John Lundstram got on the scoresheet too.

Jude Bellingham scored to threaten a comeback from Dortmund, but Morelos restored the three-goal Rangers lead.

Raphael Guerreiro pulled another back for Dortmund late on, but there was to be no miraculous fightback.

The travelling Rangers fans were in absolute dreamland, with each goal sparking wild scenes in the away end at Signal Iduna Park.

A number of Rangers players were outstanding on the night, with Alfredo Morelos causing no end of nightmares for Mats Hummels.

Co-commentator Alex Rae preferred to praise defender Calvin Baseey though, hailing Rangers’ left-sided centre back.

Bassey recently came in for criticism after a dismal showing against Celtic but was back to his best against Dortmund.

Speaking on BT Sport (60 mins), Rae branded Bassey ‘immense’, praising him for his aggressive style of defending as well as his leadership at the back.

“You have to say, Bassey has been immense tonight,” said Rae. “Aggressive and on the front foot, showing some leadership there,” he added.
