Rangers go into this weekend’s final Premiership game of the season knowing they can still wrap up an invincible season as well as securing even more records but there is one stat that underlines just how dominant the Light Blues have been this season on their march to the title.
So far Steven Gerrard’s side have recorded 25 clean sheets in the league, equalling the Scottish top-flight record, conceding only 13 goals in the process.
However, when you take into account that the Gers have seen 18 goals scored by defenders in the league it only emphasises how strong the Gers have been.
Of those 18, skipper James Tavernier has scored 12, with Connor Goldson next with four goals to his name while a solitary strike each from Fil Helander and Borna Barisic rounding out the scorer from defence.
Tavernier’s stats this season have been so impressive that the skipper is on course to end the season as the club’s leading scorer and assist provider, becoming the first Rangers defender to top both piles in the near 150-year history of the club.
Only conceding 13 league goals from 37 games so far is a remarkable feat in its own right but, incredibly, their potency in attack has almost taken some of the focus off just how tight the Gers have been at the back.
It’s not just goals either that the defence have contributed going forward, James Tavernier and Borna Barisic have also chipped in with another 18 assists between them in the league to help Rangers’ cause.
It’s long been said that the best defence starts at the front of the team but it is clear that the best attacks definitely start at the back with the Gers’ backline proving every bit as important at the top end of the pitch.
