Glasgow Rangers loanee Jermain Defoe has banged the drum ahead of Sunday’s Scottish Premiership Old Firm derby at Ibrox against bitter rivals Celtic.

Steven Gerrard’s charges will host Neil Lennon’s side, who have just won the title for the eighth season in a row, but in their last game at Ibrox – in December – it was the Light Blues who triumphed.

Defoe arrived at Ibrox in January and his one Old Firm derby to date was the 2-1 defeat to Celtic at Parkhead in March, and he is confident that everyone at the club is fully focused on getting the win.

The Bournemouth-owned forward also said he spoke to Rangers legend Graeme Souness ahead of signing for the Ibrox side and this is what he said about the Old Firm derby.

“I remember speaking to Graeme Souness before I even signed, and he said it’s the best derby in the world to play in,” Defoe told Sky Sports. “It’s a special game to play in, and to get that kind of experience at some point in your career is massive. It’s something I will look back on and be grateful for, I’m excited.

“Obviously we’ve got to be confident going into the game, especially with the way we’ve been playing in the last five games. The fans want to win the game, all the players want to win the game, everyone involved at the football club want to win the game. It’s the game to win, so we’ll be fully prepared, that’s for sure.”

Defoe joined Rangers at the start of the year on an 18-month loan deal from Bournemouth and so far he has made 12 Premiership appearances, scoring six goals and registering five assists, according to Transfermarkt.

There have been three Old Firm matches so far this season, with Rangers winning one and Celtic winning the other two.
