Rangers defender Martin rues missed chance to close gap on Celtic

Graeme Murty’s Glasgow Rangers lost at Ibrox at the weekend. Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic also dropped points.

Rangers defender Russell Martin has admitted to The Daily Record that failure to win against Hibernian at Ibrox was a missed chance for Graeme Murty’s side to close the gap on leaders and Old Firm rivals Celtic.

The Gers lost 2-1 to Hibernian at home in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday afternoon.

Earlier on Saturday, Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic had suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Kilmarnock away from home at Rugby Park.

The result mean that Rangers remain 14 points behind leaders Celtic with a game in hand and missed the chance to close the gap on the Hoops.

Rangers defender Martin, who joined the Gers on loan from Norwich City in the January transfer window, has admitted that it was a chance missed.

Martin told The Daily Record: “It’s a missed opportunity – 100 percent. We were aware of that. It (Kilmarnock v Celtic) was on in the dressing room.

“We knew we had a big chance there to gain some points and we haven’t taken it. We also let Hibs get a bit closer to us.”

Title challenge still possible?

Celtic’s defeat on Saturday was the Glasgow giants’ only second in the league under manager Rodgers.

It opened the door for Rangers to close the gap, but the Ibrox club should not lose hope.

The Hoops have lost twice in the Scottish Premiership this season, and they could drop more points between now and the end of the campaign.

What Rangers need to do is keep on picking up points and grinding out results.
