Glasgow Rangers defender Danny Wilson has enjoyed a promising run in the Ibrox side’s team lately.

Danny Wilson of Rangers arrives at the ground during the Scottish Championships match between Greenock Morton FC and Rangers at Cappielow Park on September 27, 2015 in Greenock, Scotland.

Of all the players within the Rangers squad, few seemed to benefit from Pedro Caixinha’s departure as much as Danny Wilson, with the defender making twice as many appearances under caretaker boss Graeme Murty as he had done during the months of this campaign that the Portuguese had spent in charge.

Wilson has arguably never quite convinced the fans that he is capable of holding down a centre-back spot in the Gers side, so he would have known how vital it was that he took full advantage of being given a chance by Murty during the 43-year-old’s second spell in interim charge.

Rangers have a number of impressive centre-back options, with Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso arriving in the summer and Ross McCrorie already establishing himself as an important player for the Light Blues.

But Wilson was certainly holding his own, helping the Gers to two clean sheets during his first five appearances back in the team, and of course, scoring the opener in Sunday’s clash with Aberdeen with a brilliant header.

That is why Wilson may well be kicking himself as he had to come off at the break due to a head injury that Murty later told the club’s official website will need to be assessed, seemingly throwing some doubt over his chances of featuring against Ross County on Saturday.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Scottish Cup Quarter final match between Rangers and Hamilton Academical at Ibrox Stadium on March 4, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Should he have to miss out or return to training too late to work his way back into the plans, it may well be a huge blow for the 25-year-old, with the likes of Cardoso, Alves, McCrorie and David Bates potentially ready to try and stake their claim if they get a chance at centre-back.

Wilson was starting to show signs in recent weeks that he may just be turning a corner and could potentially prove himself with a run of games in the side – so he will surely be desperately hoping that the head injury that saw him come off at Aberdeen does not hurt his position on the pecking order too much.
