Davie Selke snubbed Rangers but has now asked to leave Hertha Berlin in January having struggled for playing time this season.
The Gers were in the market for striking additions over the summer and did manage to sign Antonio Colak from PAOK.
Yet with Alfredo Morelos out of contract at the end of the season and no movement on a new deal, Rangers may need another signing.
Rangers did have another striker in mind for the summer window but weren’t quite able to convince their target to arrive.
Davie Selke snubbed Rangers
German newspaper Bild reported in September that Rangers made a move to sign Hertha Berlin attacker Davie Selke.
It was stated that Rangers had joined West Bromwich Albion, Basel, Copenhagen and even teams from Istanbul and Athens in the race for Selke.
However, Selke snubbed all of them in order to stay at Hertha – but it felt like he was just running down his contract.
Selke can become a free agent at the end of the season and rather than jump into a move over the summer, the German may have preferred to wait and have his pick of summer offers.
Selke now appears to have changed his mind.
Bild now claim that Selke has submitted a transfer request and has asked Hertha to let him go during the January window.
However, Selke allegedly earns around £50,000-a-week at Hertha and it’s unclear whether there will be any takers in January.
The 27-year-old was once backed as a huge talent at Werder Bremen and RB Leipzig but hasn’t really been in the goals of late.
Selke has scored just once in 12 Bundesliga games this season and those appearances have amounted to just 270 minutes of action.
If Rangers really did make a summer move for Selke, they will surely have an interest in the claims that he now wants to leave Werder.
Ross Wilson is under huge pressure and he may well need a new striker in January with Selke potentially available after all.
