Former St. Johnstone star Frazer Wright thinks that if Callum Davidson can repeat the Saints’ famous Scottish Cup win of 2014 and secure an scarcely-believable cup double this season, he will deserve to beat Rangers boss Steven Gerrard to this season’s Manager of the Year award.

The Saints have already lifted the League Cup this season and took a step closer to the Scottish Cup last night when they beat Rangers 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Ibrox.

Wright, who was a key part of the 2014 cup-winning side, thinks lifting the double would be a ‘phenemonal achievement’ for Davidson and his players but knows Gerrard securing Rangers first title in a decade will see him have plenty of backers too.

“Steven Gerrard has done a brilliant job with Rangers and if they finish their league campaign unbeaten then I’m sure plenty of people would back him for Manager of the Year,” Wright told the Daily Record.

“From Rangers’ point of view then the most important thing was winning the league and stopping 10 In A Row and from their supporters point of view he will still be the top man.

“But they would have wanted the two cups as well and if St Johnstone go on to claim both then, if you look at the broader picture, then for me Callum Davidson would deserve it.

“If St Johnstone win the Scottish Cup then I’d go for Callum personally because to win two out of the three major trophies in Scotland with the budget he’s got and the age of the squad, would be a phenomenal achievement.”

As well as a potential cup double, St. Johnstone also sealed a place in the top six of the Scottish Premiership after looking like seriously struggling before replacing ex-boss Tommy Wright with Davidson.

Since returning to the club where he started and ended his playing career, Davidson has taken the Saints far beyond anyone’s expectations and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he does end up pipping Gerrard to Manager of the Year despite Rangers’ title success.
