Rangers wanted Danilho Doekhi but he has now become a Union Berlin hero after scoring a last-gasp winner against Borussia Monchengladbach.
Union have been the story of the Bundesliga season so far.
Urs Fischer secured a fifth-place finish last season and is now aiming even higher.
Union were knocked off top spot by Bayern Munich on Saturday afternoon as they hammered Mainz 6-2.
Fischer’s side had the chance to go back above the Bavarian giants with a win over Gladbach – but it proved to be hard work.

Rangers wanted Danilho Doekhi
Nico Elvedi’s header but Gladbach ahead and it took Union a while to get back into the game.
Kevin Behrens equalised for the hosts before absolutely wild scenes in the dying seconds.
Defender Danilho Doekhi rose highest to head home a 97th minute winner, sending the Union fans absolutely crazy.
That goal takes Union back above Bayern and makes Doekhi a hero after his summer move from Vitesse Arnhem.
Rangers may well be kicking themselves having targeted a deal for Doekhi themselves.
The Athletic reported in January that Rangers were in a ‘strong position’ to bring Doekhi to Ibrox on a free transfer.
Doekhi was into the final six months of his Vitesse deal and Giovanni van Bronckhorst – with his knowledge of the Dutch market – wanted Doekhi.
However, De Gelderlander reported that Doekhi rejected Rangers in favour of making the move to Germany with Union.
Rangers have struggled for defensive consistency this season, largely because their senior options have been injured on and off all campaign.
Doekhi could have been what Rangers are seeking whilst possessing that goal threat at the other end of the pitch.
The Gers missed their chance to sign Doekhi and Union will be very happy as they celebrate reaching top spot after his dramatic winner.
