Danny Murphy thinks Rangers manager Steven Gerrard will still be “fuming” after the Gers’ Scottish Cup exit to St. Johnstone last night ended the Gers’ hopes of a domestic double – but the ex-Liverpool man is confident the Light Blues’ campaign “will go down in history” after an incredible league success.

Gerrard’s side lost 4-2 on penalties to St. Johnstone after a 1-1 draw at Ibrox, leaving the Rangers boss to publicly bemoan the Gers’ poor record in domestic cups over the duration of his reign in charge.

Murphy called the defeat “one small blip in a wonderful season” as the Gers now face three league games with nothing at stake before the curtain comes down on the 2020/21 campaign.

As well as the incredible league success, Murphy hailed Rangers’ Europa League exploits that saw the Gers punch above their weight and reach the last 16 for the second season in succession.

Despite that though, the ex-player turned pundit confessed Gerrard will have “woken up with an anger inside of him” after watching his side suffer only their second domestic defeat of the season.

“Knowing him like I do he will be fuming,” Murphy said on TalkSPORT

“He will have woken up with an anger inside of him, we all have it when you lose a game you know you should win.

“How they have lost will play over in his mind again and again but the overall aim for Rangers was to win the league and they have done that.

“Steven went there to win the league and overtake Celtic and he’s achieved that.

“In the Europa League this season they have punched above their weight and they got further than they should have with the squad they have.

“With the teams they were competing against, the way they got there, they played so well and they had some brilliant performances in Europe.

“No one expected them to win the Europa League, their only failure recently is going out on a one off game on penalties to St Johnstone.

“You look at every club who has had a good run of success, there are hiccups along the way.

“You can tell they are hungry for more but you don’t always get it your own way.

“It’s one small blip in a wonderful season that will go down in history of the club.

“I don’t think there will be a Rangers fan who will be critical of what the squad and Steven have achieved this season.”
