Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty could be in line for his first start this weekend.

Rangers bounced back from their weekend defeat to Hibernian by beating Partick Thistle 2-0 at Firhill on Tuesday night, handing Graeme Murty another win.

Josh Windass and James Tavernier both struck to hand Rangers another away victory, and the attention will immediately turn to this weekend’s Scottish Cup clash against Ayr.

Murty may well be considering changes for that game, and it may just present the Rangers boss with the perfect chance to hand a first start to new signing Greg Docherty.

Fellow January additions Russell Martin, Sean Goss, Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings have all made their first starts for Rangers, and now is the time for Docherty to receive his.

A recent addition from Hamilton Academical, Docherty has enjoyed a fine season so far, which sparked Rangers’ interest in January, handing the boyhood Gers fan a dream move to Ibrox.

So far, Docherty has been forced to make do with three substitute appearances, with Goss and Jason Holt nailing down spots in central midfield in Murty’s 4-2-3-1 system.

Now though, a cup tie against lower league opposition should be the perfect time to start Docherty, giving him the chance to get off to a strong start as a Rangers player.

With Ryan Jack and Graham Dorrans among the midfielders to come back for Rangers, and Andy Halliday back at the club, Docherty will be looking to make an instant impression – and there would be no better time to do it than against Ayr this weekend, providing a springboard for Docherty’s Rangers career.
