Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers are among the Scottish Premiership sides reportedly interested in signing Joaquin Fernandez.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty during the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Ranger at Celtic Park on December 30, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

It may come too late for any kind of title push this season, but there is no question that Rangers just hinted that they may be starting to close the gulf in class between themselves and Celtic with their last performance before the winter break.

Graeme Murty’s men had lost six of the previous seven Old Firm games heading into the clash at Parkhead. But, just like their previous visit to the ground when Murty was in charge of the first-team, they managed to take a share of the points, and often looked like the team that was most likely to win the game.

It is a small step, but one that should give the Gers some hope and should tempt the Ibrox side to start showing some real ambition in an attempt to make that gulf between the two sides look even smaller – and it appears that they may have an ideal opportunity to send a further statement.

According to the Daily Record, Rangers and Celtic are amongst the sides chasing River Plate youngster Joaquin Fernandez, and the pair are both planning to scout the 18-year-old wonderkid at next month’s under-20 Copa Libertadores.

While Fernandez may perhaps be some way off being ready for the first-team if he joined either Rangers or Celtic, it would arguably be a fantastic show of intent from the Gers if they managed to see off competition from their bitter rivals for his signature.

And perhaps winning the race for his signature would help the Gers in future also, as, given Fernandez’s reputation, it would be an excellent endorsement to future targets to have a player of his potential pick a switch to Ibrox over a move to the Hoops.
