Glasgow Rangers were reportedly interested in bringing Rekeem Harper to Ibrox during the summer.
Rangers would hold onto their captain. And while Steven Gerrard will surely be delighted that the deal did not take place, the talks should give him an idea ahead of the January transfer window.
The Express and Star reports that Harper is out of contract in the summer. Talks have reportedly begun over a new deal at The Hawthorns, but the Baggies will be vulnerable if the situation is not resolved by January.
As reported by the Express and Star, West Brom sold Tyler Roberts to Leeds for £4 million in the previous winter window with his contract running into its final months. Interestingly, the Daily Mail reported before his move to Elland Road that Roberts was on Rangers’ radar.
The report on Harper’s situation does not suggest whether Rangers continue to have any interest in Harper, but they should certainly have a look in a couple of months if his future remains unclear.
The Gers – if they decided to rejoin the race – could look to agree a pre-contract deal with the 18-year-old midfielder, just as they apparently hoped to with Roberts.
Harper is an extremely bright prospect and could flourish working under Gerrard at Ibrox. And with two of Gerrard’s current central midfielders only on loan, Rangers could need to strengthen their options in the summer.
It would arguably be a surprise if Harper decided not to extend his contract with West Brom. But if January arrives and question marks remain, then perhaps Rangers should have another look.
