Glasgow Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty is currently away from Ibrox having left the Gers on loan in the summer.
Of all the Rangers players currently out on loan, none are arguably doing a better job of sending a message to Steven Gerrard than Greg Docherty, who continues to impress in League One.
The 22-year-old enjoyed a bright start to his Gers career during the second-half of last season, but it seemed to make a lot of sense to loan him out while his chances of regular game-time at Ibrox looked bleak.
But Docherty appears to be making the most of his time away. The midfielder is Shrewsbury’s joint top goalscorer in League One this season, and no teammates has provided more assists either. He has had a direct hand in five league goals this term.
His form has not been ignored by the Rangers fans. And it would be a huge surprise if the Gers hierarchy had not held some discussion asking whether they want to consider bringing him back in January – if they have the option to recall him from his loan spell.
If they do have the option to bring him back into the fold early, then they certainly need to weigh everything up – especially given the latest news emerging from the Shrews.
They announced on Monday that John Askey had left his post as the club’s manager.
Askey had not enjoyed the best spell in charge, but was proving to be a manager that was getting plenty out of Docherty. And his departure should tempt Rangers to keep an even closer eye on the youngster over the next six weeks before the window opens.
If the new boss comes in and uses Docherty much more sparingly, then Gerrard must surely look to bring him back to Ibrox. He would be better off back in the mix with Rangers rather than not playing out on loan.
It seems unlikely that Docherty will be one to suffer if the next manager makes drastic changes, but Rangers still have to pay even more attention now that Askey has gone.
