Let’s be honest, Rangers need a lot going for them this season if they’re going to stop Celtic from winning 10-in-a-row.
The Bhoys have won nine Premiership titles on the bounce and come May, it could be history.
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard absolutely must not allow Celtic to achieve that.
Thing is, the Gers need major improvement after finishing 13 points behind Neil Lennon’s side last season and, with Daniel Sturridge available on a Bosman, should Gerrard take the punt here?
Sturridge has been linked with a move to Italian Serie B side Benevento [The Sun] and if they think he’s a realistic target, why wouldn’t Rangers?
Yes, Gerrard already has Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe, but the latter is injured for an unknown period of time, and the Colombian – who might not even be there for the 2020-21 campaign, following links to France – has a propensity to go off the boil in a huge way, having scored 28 of his 29 goals last season before January.
One reason why Celtic – who were only two points ahead of the Ibrox side at the time of the winter break – pulled away so emphatically was because Lennon switched things up, playing Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths at the same time.
Gerrard, who plays with one up top, could well do similar with Morelos and Sturridge. After all, the Rangers boss has compared Morelos to Luis Suarez, who had a devastating strike partnership with the England international at Liverpool.
Sturridge has also played under Gerrard, who labelled the striker ‘magnificent‘ back in 2014 and maybe, just maybe, a reunion makes sense.
It wouldn’t be guaranteed to stop Celtic from achieving history, but nothing changes if nothing changes and as things stand, Ianis Hagi is the only signing who even remotely enhances that first XI.
More is needed. Sturridge is needed.
