Rangers should consider bringing the Aussie back to Glasgow, but to Ibrox.
Burton’s Jackson Irvine celebrates scoring their first goal
Joining Rangers after playing for Celtic is not exactly the done thing in Scottish football. But players have done it before, take Kenny Miller for example, and gone on to be well received at Ibrox.
For someone who barely got a chance at Celtic it might even be the perfect chance to prove a point.
For Rangers, that should put Burton Albion midfielder Jackson Irvine firmly in their crosshairs.
Irvine was snapped up by Celtic in 2010 as a teenager from Melbourne Victory and even went on to play one game for the club. He came on as a half-time substitute against Hibernian in September 2012, but did not feature for the first-team again.
He joined Burton in the summer from Ross County and has been pivotal to the club’s survival fight in the Championship.
The Australian international has scored nine goals from midfield this season and is clearly a top talent that simply did not get a chance at Celtic.
Jackson Irvine – Celtic celebrates his goal
Rangers need a top quality central midfield operator and Irvine knows all about the Scottish game. He could provide the energy and goalscoring threat that Rangers need in the middle of the park.
If he was a hit at Ibrox, it would also get one over on their Old Firm rivals – who never gave him a chance.
That in itself might make it worth Rangers taking a risk on the Aussie.
