Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has rubbished the claim that the Gers’ title celebrations played a part in their Scottish Cup defeat by St. Johnstone last night – branding it a “cop out.”
The Gers were beaten on penalties by Callum Davidson’s side to end their dreams of a league and cup double as James Tavernier and Kemar Roofe saw their penalties saved.
Gerrard admits there was a lot of “deserved” relief when the Gers won the title last month but was abundantly clear that winning the Scottish Cup was the priority for the final weeks of the season.
After seeing his side’s season effectively end last night, Gerrard point blank refused to accept that the previous celebrations could have led to some complacency from his players.
“We felt fantastic back then and there was a lot of relief and emotions. Rightly so, we deserved that,” Gerrard told the Daily Record.
“But I made it clear the Scottish Cup was a priority and we needed to keep hungry.

“I think it’s the easy way out, a cop out, for us to use excuses from three or four weeks ago.”
