Kevin Thomson says Lewis Mayo could step in for Nikola Katic at Rangers.

Katic is out for the ‘foreseeable future’ with a cruciate ligament injury suffered while training with Rangers last week.

It is not yet clear whether or not reinforcements will be sought in the summer transfer window, with Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, George Edmundson and the newly-signed Calvin Bassey still available to Gers boss Steven Gerrard.

Speaking via the Rangers Youth Development Company on Twitter earlier (Thursday), Thomson suggested that Mayo is currently in pole position to fill Katic’s place in the squad.

But the former Rangers midfielder warned:

It is not the first time that Mayo has trained with Rangers’ first team.

But the 20-year-old Auchenhowie product is still awaiting his debut for the Gers.

He spent the second half of last season on loan to Partick Thistle, although his spell was brought to an end after just three appearances by the global health crisis.

The Scotland youth international recently entered the final year of his existing contract at Rangers.
