Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos’s failure to convert an easy chance late on against Celtic at Ibrox in the Old Firm derby has been well documented and criticised by many.

It was indeed a huge miss. Had the Colombian striker scored, it would have at least helped the Gers pick up a point from the Scottish Premiership game.

Morelos was subsequently dropped to the substitutes’ bench for Rangers’ league fixture against Kilmarnock at Ibrox at the weekend, but Graeme Murty’s side did not win, going down 1-0.

While it is easy to criticise a striker who failed to score from just a few yards out, Jonatan Johansson’s comments about the age of Morelos is a timely reminder to those who have been hammering him.

The Rangers assistant coach, who played as a striker for the Gers from 1997 until 2000, told The Telegraph: “People forget sometimes how young Alfredo is because he plays such a physical game.

“In the last two or three years he has moved countries and had to learn new languages, so these have been big changes for him.”

Timely reminder

Johansson’s comments are a timely reminder to the critics of Morelos to go easy on the 21-year-old striker.

At such a young age, players will make mistakes and will have inconsistencies in their game.

For those hammering Morelos must have to accept that in a game of football, strikers will miss chances.

What the critics of the 21-year-old should remember is that he has scored 13 goals and provided five assists in the Scottish Premiership this season, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.

Morelos joined Rangers from HJK Helsinki in the summer of 2017 for a transfer fee reported by Sky Sports to be worth £1.5 million.
