Chris Sutton has made a name for himself taking the opposite position to Rangers on virtually everything – but the pundit has surprised some by insisting Ibrox teen Nathan Patterson’s place in Steve Clarke’s Euro 2020 squad is “far from a gamble.”
Patterson is the first teenager to be named in a Scotland squad for a major tournament and the right-back could win his first senior cap in the pre-tournament friendlies against Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
The right-back is one of several uncapped players in the Scotland squad for the Euros, alongside ex-Rangers kid Billy Gilmour and Celtic’s David Turnbull, with some critics insisting Patterson lacks the experience needed to be part of the squad.
Sutton, surprisingly, rubbished that and even the staunchly anti-Rangers pundit feels that Patterson be a valuable asset for Scotland at their first major tournament in 23 years.
“Patterson, I don’t think its a brave call… I think it’s the right call,” Sutton said on BT Sport’s Scottish Football Extra
“We’ve seen enough of him. People are saying it’s a gamble, not from what I’ve seen.
“It’s far from a gamble.”
With Scotland set to face Croatia, Czech Republic and England at Euro 2020, Patterson will face a tough test if he does get the nod from Clarke.

After having to sit out the final weeks of the season through suspension, Patterson will be fresh and raring to go when the squad meets up ahead of reporting to their training base in England.
