Rangers icon Barry Ferguson has told Steven Gerrard’s stars their season will end “under a big black cloud” if they lost to Celtic this weekend and lose their unbeaten league record.
The Gers are three games from an unbeaten top-flight campaign, something the Light Blues last managed way back in 1898/99 but have been out of sorts lately, failing to win either of their previous two fixtures.
With the league title the only piece of silverware heading to Ibrox this season, Gerguson insists that is “never enough” and believes the players will “still be hurting” from their Scottish Cup exit against St. Johnstone.
“Winning one trophy is never enough,” Ferguson told the Daily Record. “At Ibrox it’s always about lifting the next one so the disappointment which followed Sunday’s Scottish Cup defeat to St Johnstone will still be hurting them today.
“But I have got a message for each and every one of them ahead of the last Old Firm derby of the season. Go out there and win this one for yourselves.
“You’ve worked too hard, given too much and performed too well to allow this campaign to end under a big black cloud.
“You deserve to go into the summer on a high after what you have achieved in securing title No.55. So make sure you go out with the bang you deserve.
“Trust me on this, if Rangers were to let their unbeaten league season slip against the noisy neighbours then these players will have to carry it all the way through the close season. After the contribution they have made to the club’s history they have earned the right to feel better than that.

“So please, don’t tell me this game is nothing more than a dead rubber. In this part of the world, there is no such thing.”
