Glasgow Rangers were linked with a potential move to try and bring Milad Mohammadi to Ibrox in the summer.
The Gers emerged from the summer window in good shape in those areas of the pitch. But heading into January, Rangers should still consider a potential move for the 25-year-old amid reports that their bitter rivals are keen on bringing him to the Scottish Premiership.
Rangers may have a lot of options at full-back, but they must not pass up the chance to try and sign Mohammadi on a free transfer. Speculation continues that James Tavernier is likely to attract January attention, with the Daily Record recently suggesting that West Brom are scouting the Gers captain and Brighton may be tempted to reignite their own interest.
Meanwhile, Borna Barisic has endured a difficult time with injury. Andy Halliday has stepped up superbly when Gerrard has used him at left-back and Jon Flanagan is clearly a fantastic signing on a free transfer.
But adding to their options – especially when there may be a potential question mark lingering over Tavernier’s future – appears to be a wise decision, especially when the player involved is an international who could be available on a free in the summer.
Mohammadi would also improve Rangers’ wide options further up the pitch, which could prove beneficial if Gerrard is unable to extend Ryan Kent’s loan deal beyond this season.
Mohammadi could be considered something of a luxury target for Rangers, who probably go into January with greater priorities. But he could be a fantastic signing given his contract status and the fact that the Gers are continuing to build a squad that can compete on four fronts, including in Europe.
The latest reports hint that Mohammadi could be Glasgow-bound. Gerrard must consider doing all he can to make sure that Ibrox is his destination.
