Henning Berg wants the Rangers job, three years after his Legia Warsaw side were thrown out of the Champions League for Celtic.

Another day and another out of work manager has thrown his hat into the ring to take over at Rangers. Following in the footsteps of Gus Poyet and Michel Preud’homme, the Daily Record reports that Henning Berg has made his interest clear after Rangers opened the door to applications.

The 48-year-old former Norway international was somewhat harshly sacked by Hungarian side Videoton after he lost the league title to Honved on the final day of last season. It is understood Berg, who ended his playing career at Rangers in the 2003/04 campaign, would jump at the chance to return to Glasgow and take over from Pedro Caixinha.

And Berg would be facing a familiar foe if he took over at Ibrox. After all, it could be argued the 100-cap Norwegian has unfinished business with Rangers’ bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Point to prove

During his successful spell in charge of Polish outfit Legia Warsaw, Berg made counterpart and compatriot Ronny Deila look very average indeed in a now-infamous Champions League qualifier in 2014/15.

Legia battered Celtic 4-1 in Poland before cruising to a 2-0 win at Parkhead to seal a 6-1 aggregate triumph. Just days later, however, Berg’s celebrations were cut brutally short.

Legia were found guilty of fielding an ineligible player as Bartosz Bereszynski with just minutes to go in the second leg. The midfielder was supposed to be suspended after receiving a red card the 2013/14 Europa League. Celtic were therefore awarded a 3-0 defeat win – which put the Scottish champions through to the next round on away goals.

“For Uefa to make a decision like this, with all the consequences….it’s unbelievable,” a stunned Berg said in quotes reported by The Telegraph.

“It’s very, very difficult to take and I think it goes against every intention of fair play and fair competition.”

What better way for Berg to banish his frustrations of that tie than to guide Rangers to their first league win against Celtic since the 2011/12 season?
