Rangers have confirmed that Wednesday’s pre-season friendly with Blackpool has been cancelled due to an”ongoing COVID-19 related issue within the Blackpool camp.”

The Light Blues were due to head south to play in front of thousands of Rangers fans as swathes of Bluenoses planned a trip south to take in the game.

Rangers had as many as 4500 tickets for the friendly clash but will now be left disappointed.

The Gers have faced Partick Thistle, Tranmere Rovers and Arsenal so far in pre-season – with games against Brighton and Real Madrid this weekend.

With less than two weeks until the Scottish Premiership season gets started, it comes at an inopportune time but with two more fixtures scheduled, it isn’t a huge issue.

The biggest disappointment will be for the supporters who were travelling in numbers likely to well exceed the official allocation as things slowly start to return to normal.

Given the risk to the Rangers players and staff with the Covid issues at Blackpool, it makes sense to call the friendly off and hopefully there will be a sizeable number of fans allowed into this weekend’s games at Ibrox instead.

Gerrard’s side kick off the Premiership season on July 31 when they welcome Livingston to Ibrox before taking on Malmo or HJK Helsinki a few days later in the Third Qualifying Round of the Champions League.
