Glasgow Rangers have been linked with bringing Alan Hutton back to Ibrox as his contract expires.
It remains to be seen if he is offered fresh terms with his current club, but it seems that the Villans’ inability to secure promotion certainly leaves his future in doubt, as reported by Birmingham Live.
Birmingham Live adds that Rangers could be a potential option for the 33-year-old if he leaves, and it is highly possible that the Gers fans would be divided on the prospect of the full-back returning a decade after his first spell at Ibrox came to an end.
Hutton is edging towards the twilight of his career and has struggled to win over a decent portion of the Villa fanbase during his time in the Midlands. And with Rangers boasting James Tavernier at right-back, it may initially appear to be difficult to see Hutton playing a prominent role if he did join Steven Gerrard’s ranks this summer.
However, Hutton’s performances this past season should perhaps give the Rangers fans hope that if the club did re-sign the former Scotland international, he could actually prove to be a very shrewd addition to the Light Blues’ squad.
The former Tottenham ace – who the Gers sold for £9 million, according to BBC Sport – has been outstanding in the left-back role for Villa and arguably enjoyed one his best seasons since leaving Rangers a decade ago.
Signing him on a free would therefore, not only provide Tavernier with competition, but it would also give Declan John something to think about or perhaps give Gerrard the freedom to hand the Welshman the chance to play slightly further forward if required. John certainly seemed to be at his best when given license to get down the line and support attacks.
Wages may be a stumbling block perhaps, but the lack of a transfer fee would still hint that a deal could be a fantastic one for the Scottish Premiership giants should they manage to get something done.
