Rangers have confirmed they are “aware of an incident” involving Academy striker Chris McKee and vowed to “thoroughly” investigate after he was sent off for allegedly using homophobic language in Brechin City’s Playoff defeat to Kelty Hearts.
The Northern Irish teenager was dismissed shortly before the break as Brechin’s 1-0 defeat condemned them to relegation from the SPFL after a 2-1 loss in the first leg.
Brechin player/manager Michael Paton told BBC Scotland after the game that McKee was in tears in the dressing-room as a result, with the teen likely facing a lengthy ban.
Rangers insisted the incident will be “treated with the utmost seriousness” and the player will no doubt face serious repercussions if the allegations are true.
“Rangers are aware of an incident involving one of our on-loan academy players during a match this afternoon,” the club told Sky Sports.
“We will investigate this incident thoroughly and it will be treated with the utmost seriousness. As a club, we oppose all forms of discrimination. We will handle this incident robustly.”
McKee moved to Ibrox in 2018 from Linfield and has impressed in the Academy sides for Rangers before heading to Brechin on loan.
While he couldn’t help them retain their SPFL status, McKee put in some impressive performances for Paton’s side, featuring in a number of different roles.
