Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has set tongues wagging after suggesting a new deal for Glen Kamara to extend his Ibrox stay doesn’t look likely to happen, no doubt attracting attention from a number of clubs keen on landing the Finn.
Boyd wrote in his Scottish Sun column that ”reading between the lines” the time taken to get a deal done for Kamara doesn’t bode well, and the likes of Leeds and Arsenal will have their attention piqued.
With two more years on his Rangers contract, there’s no pressing need to get a deal done or sell – but if Kamara doesn’t sign a new deal by this time next year, then there will be some more pressure to get something back.
However, while Boyds reads between the lines, there are plenty of comments on the possibility of a new deal for the Finn.
Both Gerrard and Kamara have publicly spoken about the prospect of an extension and, while Boyd thinks a new contract won’t happen, the public comments from them certainly don’t make it appear as obvious as Boyd suggest.
Speaking in March, Kamara hinted there wouldn’t be any movement on his deal until the summer, confirming that he had held talks over a new contract, saying: “There’s been some talks. The season’s been good, obviously we’ve just become champions. It’s been a success so far.
“I still have two years left on my contract and there’s still time over the summer to see what will happen.”
Gerrard hasn’t been shy in his desire to keep the Finnish international at Ibrox, making his feelings clear publicly on a number of occasions, saying in October 2020 that he had already told the board he wanted a new deal for Kamara: “I’ve made my feelings known to Ross (Wilson, sporting director) and the board on that situation.
“Glen has been fantastic for me since day one. He’s grown and he’s evolved. He’s improved and he’s listened. There were different areas of his game that we felt we could shape and help him become a better player.
“But he is the one who has really gone out and worked on his game both in and out of possession. He’s in a fantastic place and is playing with confidence.”
A few months later and Gerrard was still urging Rangers to tie Kamara down, telling BT Sport in December that his advice to the club was to “move that situation along as quickly as they can.”
With interest in Kamara ramping up in January, Sky Sports reported (Transfer Centre, 04/01/2021, 13.55) that Gerrard wanted the club to make tying the former Dundee and Arsenal midfielder down a “priority.”
Kamara’s performances have made securing his long-term future something that every Rangers fan wants to see happen soon so it will be interesting to see if there is any movement in the coming months.
